Hospice Caregiver Spotlight Winner

"Hospice is about finding hope in each day, giving patients and families control and a say in making decisions."

Hospice Volunteer

Congratulations Elise Power!

FAITH Presbyterian Hospice provides hospice care in the home, nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living communities and in our inpatient hospice center, the T. Boone Pickens Center, north of Medical City Dallas.

With more than 30 years experience in the hospice industry, Elise’s passion is to make a difference in patients’ and families’ lives by educating the Jewish community on compassionate end-of-life care, more specifically Jewish hospice care that is Accredited by the National Institute for Jewish Hospice. When there is no cure, caring takes over. As Rabbi Irwin Kula says so beautifully “Fighting fiercely to live includes knowing when not to let go but rather to take hold and live until our last breath…what Jewish wisdom names the divine kiss”.

Elise found her calling as a hospice trailblazer in the North Texas Jewish community when she moved to Dallas in 2003, recruited from New Jersey as a hospice educator and administrator. She didn’t set out to create a niche, but quickly discovered hospice services didn’t exist in the Jewish community. Today, she gets calls from around the country and spends her days talking to physicians, nurses, social workers, discharge planners, rabbis, congregations, and families throughout the Jewish community.

“Elise has cared for more than 1,920 Jewish families during the past eight years,” said John Mezo, Executive Director, FAITH Presbyterian Hospice.

Elise is a member of Temple Emanu-El Dallas. She has been recognized in the community by receiving the following awards: the Each Moment Matters honor from FAITH Presbyterian Hospice for being an “agent of change” in 2018, the Lifetime Friendship Award from the National Institute for Jewish Hospice in 2018, and the “Carrying the Torch” award in 2017 from the Daughters of WWII.

FAITH’S compassionate end-of-life care supports life and hope, and the values of Jewish tradition. We work closely with Rabbi Howard Wolk, Community Chaplain of Jewish Family Service.

Congratulations Karla Blanton!

Karla Blanton’s first degree was in economics. After doing the same job for 18 years she was burnt out and no longer had passion for her work. She decided to change her career and went back to school to get a Bachelor’s in Nursing.

One year after starting her nursing career in a hospital, her heart told her to become a hospice nurse. Karla explains, “I’m not sure anyone chooses to be a hospice nurse. I think it is a calling. At least for me that was the case.”

Being a hospice nurse brought back Karla’s passion for her work again.  “Every day I get to support patients and their families in probably the most trying time in their lives and that brings meaning to my life,” Karla continues, “People often say ‘how do you do this job?’ I tell them God gives you strength for what he sends you to do.  Where else can you have a job where you see the power of God working in the lives of so many people?”

The people Karla cares for open their hearts and homes to a total stranger at a very vulnerable time in their lives.  Karla acknowledges this and tries to bring them some semblance of peace during her time with them, stating “I love my job as a hospice nurse and feel blessed to be fulfilling God’s purpose for me.”
