Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.Memorial Tree was purchased for the family of Claire Altman by The Goodman Financial Team.
Claire R. Altman passed away early Saturday morning, September 10, 2022, with her family by her side.
Even though Claire lived most of her life here in Houston, she never lost her New York accent or attitude. She was the daughter of Esther and Irving Slater and the big sister to Marvin Slater.
It was at City College that Claire met the love of her life, Joe Altman. They were married for over 60 years and had 3 children: Jodi Kessler (Glenn), Ross Altman, and Sari Obermeyer (Kevin). Claire was Grandma to Davna Teverovsky, Jonathan Kessler (Elyssa), Macee Obermeyer, Erica Altman, and Jeret Obermeyer. She was Bubbie to Madison Teverovsky, Brody Teverovsky, Ari Kessler, and Maya Kessler. Claire was Aunt to J.J. Slater (Lori) and Matthew Slater (Becky) and Great Aunt to Max, Samantha, and Addison Slater.
Most women entering college in our mom's day, attended to become teachers, secretaries, or nurses. Not Claire, she was there to get her degree in Business and was off to buck the norm. More times than not she would be told that "she would be taking the job of a man who needed to support his family". She was undeterred and did find her niche in the Import/Export field. When she left the job to move to Houston with our dad, her boss had to hire three people to do her job as efficiently.
Claire was very philanthropic and supported a variety of Jewish organizations, Houston SPCA, and most importantly, The State of Israel. She loved to travel and was fortunate enough to see the sights all over the globe. Whether travelling with The Jewish Federation or her closest friends, she loved each and every trip.
While it is painful to say goodbye to mom, we find solace in knowing that her mind and body are at peace. As it is written in the first Book of Samuel, "May her soul be bound up in the bond of eternal life". She is laughing and dancing and being guided by her loved ones, friends, and most importantly G-D. Besides seeing Joe again, she was looking forward to being with her Grandfather Max, her Aunt Mildred and her favorite brother, Marvin.
Stuart Weisberg may not be a blood relative, but he is a part of the family. He played an integral role in helping mom on a daily basis. We would also like to thank the caregivers of Friendly Faces. Every single person that came to help our mom did so with love, compassion, and with a gentle touch.
A family only burial took place at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Congregation Beth El, The Jewish Federation of Houston, The Houston SPCA, or an organization of your choice.
