After a remarkable 93 years of living life to its fullest, Dr. Marvin J. Speer died peacefully in his home on April 24, 2021. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Beverly Ruth Kaplan Speer of Kaplan, LA.

Born in Beaumont, TX, the baby of eight siblings, Marvin was also preceded in death by his parents, Fannie & Pete Speer, seven older siblings, Freda Rubenstein and husband Louis, Hyman Speer and wife Lillian, Louis Speer and wife Pauleen, Celia Gaitz and husband Charles, Sam Speer and wife Rita, Lily Goldsobel and husband Jack, Morrie Speer and wife Doris, and brother-in-law Connie Kaplan.

Marvin is survived by his children, Saranne Speer Selber and Stuart Speer and wife Lori, his grandchildren, Peter Selber and wife Audrey, Jennifer Gustafson and husband Eric, Zack Speer and Matthew Speer and fiancé Mary, his great grandchildren George, Bridget, Raegan and Eleanor and his myriad of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great grandnieces and nephews across the country and in Mexico and, sister-in-law Sue Kaplan, all of whom he adored and doted on until his final breath. He is also survived by longtime friend, Dorothy "LuLu" Eaton.

After retiring from a successful optometry career, Marvin's extensive network of proud family and friends benefited from precious time spent together at family gatherings and milestone events, beach trips, on the golf course or around the poker table. Marvin leaves his large family with a sense of "blue-blooded" familial connection, exceptional pride in their Jewish heritage and years of laughter and smiles thanks to the many "Marvinisms" they came to know and love. To know Marvin was to love him. And to be loved by Marvin meant reveling in his indelible (and often, flirtatious) charm.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 2:30pm. To join the the service virtually click on the zoom link below:

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to JDRF or Jewish Family Service of Houston (JFS).

There are no events scheduled.
