Dorys Sandra Sussman passed away in Dallas, Texas on December 30, 2020. Dorys was born in Staten Island, NY to Murray and Edith Rosen on June 14, 1936, and moved to West Palm Beach, FL where she grew up and graduated from West Palm Beach High School. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami, and taught elementary school in the Coral Gables school district. She retained a strong focus on education throughout her life.

Dorys and her husband, Paul, to whom she remained devoted for 47 years until his passing in 2004, moved to Texas in 1961, where she raised her family and worked for 25 years as a community liaison for the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, where she welcomed new residents to the Dallas community and combined two of her passions - Jewish culture and conversing with anyone, friend or stranger. In her spare time, she loved playing Mahjong and going to the movies and dinner with friends. Dorys was confident and assertive, loyal and dedicated to family, and had a keen sense of humor and laughed easily.

Dorys is preceded in death by her parents, Edith and Murray Rosen, and her husband, Paul. She is survived by her children, Ronnie and wife Gigi, Nancy and Bobby; and her grandchildren, Layton, Owen, Sam, Evan and Reed, to whom she was a proud and doting Nana.

The family will hold a private graveside service. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the warm and caring staff of Crystal Creek at Preston Hollow, who provided Dorys with wonderful care in her final years.

Doris it was truly a pleasure knowing you. Your dry wit made every day at work so much fun. I miss my time at Crystal Creek with you. In recent weeks I have been thinking about you very heavily and now I realize why.

I'm happy to have known you.

am so saddened to read of Dorys’s passing. We were friends for the years I volunteered for bingo and word games at The Legacy then Crystal Creek. Dorys would always come when we needed extra people even though she insisted word games were not in her wheelhouse. Somehow she still managed to contribute extensively. Whenever there was a word unknown to the volunteers or Dorys, we would pause, look it up in the dictionary, and discuss. She talked extensively of her family and was proud of the grandkids and their travel and school accomplishments. She aced her role as a Jewish mom by worrying about Ronnie’s health or Bobby’s workload. Whenever we discussed life as an “independent woman,” Dorys would often speak about Nancy and her social work with pride. Dorys was always thankful for a “push” to the elevator or back to her room which was kept so warm we called her “the orchid” with her own warm and humid climate where she thrived best. When it is safe to go back and volunteer, Dorys will be sorely missed. My condolences to the Sussman family and to all those lives Dorys had a role in. May her memory be a blessing.
