Ruth Katz Lewis passed away on June 20, 2018, 7 Tammuz, 5778.   She was born in Memphis, Tennessee on July 6, 1928 to Sam and Molly Katz, z"l, one of four sisters and three brothers.

Ruth graduated with a teaching degree from Memphis State College and taught in Memphis public schools before moving to Houston in 1953 to take a job in HISD.   She rented a room from the Nachlas family and Jennie Nachlas introduced her cousin, Buddy Lewis, to Ruth.   After a year of dating, he asked her "if she was ready" and that led to almost sixty four years of marriage.   She suspended her teaching career to have her children Michael and Lisa, resuming in 1970 at Beth Yeshurun where she taught first grade secular studies and Customs and Ceremonies for over twenty years.

Ruth was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to so many who loved her.   She was humble, kind, generous, and willingly shared her love with all she met.   She never said a harsh word about anyone or raised her voice in anger and her quiet ways and caring heart were a model to everyone.   She received great joy from her family and friends and will be greatly missed.

Ruth is survived by her husband, Ben T. Buddy Lewis, brother Harold Katz, son Michael and daughter-in-law Klara, daughter Lisa and son-in-law Kevin Klein, grandchildren Daniella Lewis, Joseph Lewis, Lean and Ari Lebowicz, Benjamin Klein, Hannah Klein, Samuel Klein, great-grandson Joshua Jacob Lebowicz (JJ), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services were held at Beth Yeshurun Allen Parkway Cemetery at 11 AM on Thursday, June 21, 2018, officiated by Rabbi Danny Horwitz.

Donations in memory of Ruth Katz Lewis may be made to a charity of your choice.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 11:00 am Beth Yeshurun Allen Parkway 3502 Allen Parkway, Houston, 77019.

Always a beautiful, caring, kind, loving and encouraging lady. Ruth was the inspiration for my daughter Stacey who followed in her footsteps becoming a kindergarten and 1st grade teacher like her mentor. Condolences to her family.
