Rhoda P. Sklar, 87, died Thursday, April 14, 2016 at Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services. She leaves her husband of nearly 59 years, Herman. She leaves her children - Emily and husband, Steve, Larry and wife, Jackie and Marjorie and husband, Mark. She also leaves her grandchildren - Brian and wife, Lauren, Alexandra, Scott and Sarah and her great grandson, Trent.
Rhoda was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts to George and Beatrice Libertow. She came from a large extended family and had seven first cousins. The "Cousins Club" was made up of the seven cousins, Rhoda, her sister, Sylvia and everyone's spouses. They were a close knit, loving, fun and loud group.
Rhoda graduated high school at age sixteen and was the fastest typist in her class. She was also an excellent stenographer. These skills served her well as she was anxious to begin working and her first job was at a magazine in Boston. She was a lifelong Boston Red Socks fan.
In 1956 Rhoda came to Houston to visit her cousin Audrey and made Houston her home for the rest of her life. At an oneg Shabbat, she met the love of her life, Herman. She and Herman were engaged six weeks after they met and were married six weeks after that. They were inseparable and always in love with each other. Rhoda loved Herman's bald head and said that in her experience, bald headed men were always very kind so this was a plus for Herman. Emily, Larry and Marjorie followed quickly.
Rhoda's family was always the most important thing to her. Rhoda and Herman's home was always open to their friends and to their children's friends and the friends were made to feel like family. There were no strangers in the Sklar household.
Rhoda and her sister, Sylvia, were very close and always lived within walking distance of each other. If they weren't together, they were on the phone to each other.
Rhoda loved dogs and they loved her. If a dog was around, you could be sure they were both very happy.
As her children grew and were married, Rhoda felt that she gained a daughter and two more sons - Jackie, Steve and Mark.
Once her grandchildren were born, Rhoda thought her life was complete. Brian, Alexandra, Scott and Sarah were the apples of her eye. She was thrilled to add another granddaughter when Brian married Lauren. The icing on her cake was when her great grandson, Trent, was born.
Rhoda was a warm-hearted and loving woman who always felt that life gave so much more than she ever expected.
